Paxil

Paxil_warningPaxil Warning Issued Due to Birth Defects

Paxil is a prescription drug that is used to treat various mood disorders such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).  Paxil as an antidepressant drug is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).  Paxil works by returning the balance of the neurotransmitter serotoninin that helps you get control of mood swings. The FDA has issued a Paxil Warning due to an increased risk of birth defects.

Paxil, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has been linked to adverse side effects and death.  Medical studies have found that paxil is associated with infant heart defects and other Paxil Side effects which are harmfull.  Other Paxil studies done on cancer patients demonstrated an increased risk of death.  If you have taken the prescription antidepressant Paxil and experienced adverse side effects, you need to talk with your healthcare provider as soon as possible and tell them about the new FDA Paxil Warning.

Paxil Side effects Include

Clinical studies report a number of Paxil birth defects that may occur when taking Paxil during pregnancy that include:

  • Abnormally shaped head
  • Heart injury
  • Brain and/or spinal cord injury
  • Lung damage
  • Abdominal wall damage
  • Club foot
  • Closure of the anus

Make sure to follow any updates on the Paxil Warning either through the GSK website or the FDA drug warning site.  It's always a good idea to continue reading and learning about any drugs you have taken in the past and/or currently taking to protect yourself from harm.  Of course, you can always report any adverse side effect associated with the use of any drug by contacting the FDA MedWatch Program

Below is a list of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in addition to Paxil that are commonly taken by women during pregnancy and beyond:

  • Zoloft (sertraline)
  • Prozac (fluoxetine)
  • Symbyax (olanzepine/fluoxetine)
  • Paxil (paroxetine)
  • Lexapro (escitalopram)
  • Fluvoxamine
  • Celexa (citalopram)

It is best to weigh the pros and cons when using selective serotonin reuptake inhibiors (SSRI) and other antidepressants when pregnant.  Studies demonstrate that women who have a history of depression tend to have a higher risk of depression recurrence during pregnancy if they discontinue antidepressant drugs.  Make sure you are well informed and ask questions until you are satisfied.  Birth defects are a serious matter.
