Actos and Bladder Cancer Risk

Actos controls blood sugar and is sometimes sold in combination with metformin (Actoplus) Met, glimepiride (Duetact).) and Actoplus Met XR. It is estimated that over 2 million people currently use these drugs and need to be warned about the risk of Actos and  bladder cancer. Some experts are indicating there may be as much as a 40% increase in bladder cancer risk due to Actos.

The FDA is warning patients concerning the dangers of Actos and bladder cancer specifically those who have taken  the  drug Actos (Pioglitazone) for more than a year due a potential  increased risk of bladder cancer based on a newly released  study.  Actos patients with longer use of the drug have the highest risk of Actos bladder cancer.

Both Germany and France have susspended use of the drug although Actos is still being perscribed here in  in the US.    The Actos and bladder cancer warning concerning the potentail new danger will begin apearing on the drugs labeling per the request of the FDA.  

Symptoms of Actos and Bladder Cancer

Symptoms of bladder cancer relating to Actos include blood in your urine,  an urgent need to urinate,  pain duing urination and pain in the back or lower part of the adomen.

The FDA Actos and Bladder Cancer Warning indicated that diabetes patients taking Actos should tell their doctor if they have any of the above symptoms relating to Actos bladder cancer. Patients should talk to their doctors before making any changes to their medicine use and talk to their doctors about any concerns they have with using Actos. Do not stop taking Actos until you have spoken to your doctor.
